Conquering Subconscious Patterning: How Are Your Conditioned Thoughts and Beliefs Impacting Your Present and Future

How is your past creating your present and future?

By the time we’ve reached adulthood, we’ve all developed patterns for how we automatically react and respond to life, and beliefs, thoughts, and patterns that are imprinted and determine our choices and how we feel about ourselves and the world around us.  Basically, the past dictates our present (and future), often without us having any awareness that it’s happening. Often, the story we’re living by that is so deeply engrained is rooted in abandonment, neglect, our parents' or caregivers' own conditioning or inability to be there for us the way we needed, etc. These patterns are so powerful because they cause us to repeat history because it’s all we’ve known and it feels familiar.  Until we become aware of these patterns, we continue to react to and navigate life in the same old ways.  And this explains why everyone responds to similar situations in various ways. 


According to researchers at Duke University, about 40% of everyday behaviors are habits.  This means that for about half of our day, we’re running on autopilot (I have a feeling it may be more, but what do I know!).  We repeat the same actions, thoughts, and behaviors that have been deeply ingrained in us, sometimes over many many years of our lives, without even being aware of them or examining them to see if they’re keeping us stuck or propelling us forward.   Yikes!   Until we bravely examine our conditioning and these patterns, they likely will not change. 


Here are a few examples of subconscious patterning, or conditioning:


  • Repeated patterns in relationships

  • Lack of fulfillment in your career

  • Until now, lack of awareness around your habits, thoughts, and beliefs

  • Striving for perfectionism

  • Poor or no boundaries

  • Low confidence

  • Unsure of who you truly are

  • Feeling like something is missing from life

  • Repeated choices and patterns that you aren’t really happy about

  • Your life path looks awfully similar to the people you grew up around

  • Pretending or striving to be someone else

  • Inability to express your feelings or emotions

  • Strong beliefs about things that don’t actually feel in alignment

  • You feel unsure of who you truly are and/or unworthy.

  • Life feels predictable, boring even

 

By reflecting on how much of what we do and think did not originate as our own idea, and letting go of things that do not serve us, we are freed to embrace a new mental state and a life that is more genuine to who we truly are and how we want to live. Reflection is the key to unmasking these behaviors and beliefs.


How Does This Impact Authenticity and Why Does It Matter


The reason that understanding your conditioning is so powerful is because it is what created your foundation of understanding of life, emotions, and behaviors. We develop an understanding of who we are and who we should be.  We learn what gets us approval and acceptance, and what gets us rejection and pain. This then determines how we react, behave, think, and what we create in our daily lives.


Living out of alignment with our true selves often creates a negative impact on our relationships, careers, family, and most importantly, our mental and physical well-being.  When we aren’t honoring our dreams, desires, and needs, we often put others first, neglect ourselves, hide our truth, and feel unhappy and unsatisfied.  Ironically, it takes more work to live this way and causes things like burnout, fatigue, and low confidence.


What To Do to Let Go of the Past and Create Your Future


This is where shadow work is incredibly helpful.  Beginning to dig into what masks you may be wearing, how you may be hiding your true self from the world, and how these things are limiting your potential, happiness, fulfillment, and more is KEY!  It can certainly be alarming to wake up to the truth of how you’ve been living, especially if it truly feels so inauthentic with your true inner nature, but now you can make the choice to live the way YOU want to live!  You get to write the rules, create your beliefs, and determine your values – that’s exciting! 


When you start to take control of the direction of your life, everything shifts, EVERYTHING. 


The paradigm shift happens when we’re ready to throw out the old and embrace the new!


Our subconscious patterning does not have to define our future. 


  1. The first step to interrupting the conditioned responses is to develop the awareness that we are simply responding to our programming.  This is not a time for blaming our parents, shaming ourselves, or anything like this.  We just begin to notice that triggered memories and feelings are running the show. 

  2. Then we can expand our perception and expose ourselves to alternate possibilities! 

  3. Then it’s time to replace anything that no longer aligns or serves us with new, desired feelings, beliefs, responses, and thoughts, and take the appropriate steps to implement these new ways of thinking and being. 

This can take time, just like the original conditioning.  Be patient with yourself and celebrate your successes along the way.  You have the power to change and just imagine what you can create if you channel all your time on autopilot into a story you truly want!   


Living Authentically


Once you’ve begun to do the work of creating your unique path in life, you may start to experience some of the amazing benefits of living authentically:


You’ve started setting healthier boundaries or speaking up for yourself

You pursue activities, jobs, and relationships that excite you

You notice your relationships feel more genuine and deeper

You have more confidence and self-love

You notice you respond differently to things than you used to

And SO MUCH MORE
